Currently, the Math Placement exam being used is the COMPASS Math Test. This test is taken online. Times are scheduled for administration during pre-registration and registration periods. If the ACT Math test has been taken, and the score is high enough, you can place into a math class without taking the placement exam.
The purpose of setting placement requirements is to ensure that students entering these courses have the background necessary to increase the probability of completing the courses successfully. Please check with your advisor to see if your program of study requires MTH 1112, Pre-Calculus Algebra, or MTH 1110, Finite Mathematics or both. MTH 1105, Intermediate Algebra, is a prerequisite for both MTH 1112 and MTH 1110 unless you place directly into MTH 1112 or MTH 1110.
Verification of your placement should be taken to your advisor during registration, and to the first class meeting. If your placement has not been verified by the end of the last day to add a course, you will be dropped from the class.
The required scores for placement are as follows:
You will place in MTH 0096, Pre-Algebra, if
• Your Math ACT Score was between 0 and 13, inclusive.
• You took the COMPASS Math Test and scored from 0 – 21 on the
Pre-Algebra Test.
You will place in MTH 1100, Fundamentals of Algebra, if
• Your Math ACT Score was between 14 and 16, inclusive.
• You took the COMPASS Math Test and scored from 22 – 100 on the Pre-Algebra Test.
You will place in MTH 1105, Intermediate Algebra, if
• Your Math ACT Score was between 17 and 19, inclusive.
• You took the COMPASS Math Test and scored from 22 – 60 on the Algebra Test.
You will place in MTH 1105, Intermediate Algebra, but because of the following reason your score is considered borderline, and you may register for either MTH 1112, Pre-Calculus Algebra, or MTH 1110, Finite Mathematics, if
• Your Math ACT Score was between 20 and 22, inclusive.
• You took the COMPASS Math Test and scored from 50 – 60 on the Algebra Test.
You will place in either MTH 1112, Pre-Calculus Algebra, or MTH 1110, Finite Mathematics, if
• Your Math ACT Score was between 23 and 24, inclusive.
- You took the COMPASS Math Test and scored from 0 – 54 on the College Algebra Test.
Please check with your advisor to determine the course you need for your program.
You will place in MTH 1114, Pre-Calculus Trigonometry, or MTH 2201, Business Calculus, if
• Your Math ACT Score is 25 or higher and your advisor recommends this course.
• You took the COMPASS Math Test and scored from 0 – 45 on the Trigonometry Test.
You will place in MTH 1125, Calculus I, if
• Your Math ACT Score is 25 or higher and your advisor recommends this course.
• You took the COMPASS Math Test and scored from 46 – 100 on the Trigonometry Test.
