Historical Note: Ms. Nellie Irene Pierce of Tallassee, Alabama (1895-1971), corresponded with a number of soldiers in various units during World War I. Most of those soldiers were from Tallassee, including her brother William S. Pierce and her future husband, John R. Godwin (1892-1960).
Scope/Content: Collection consists of 11 letters with 10 envelopes and 40 postcards Irene Pierce received or wrote but did not send, 2 loose photographs and a photo album of 35 images (most of which are not identified), and 2 miscellaneous items (including trooper boarding card for USS
Organization: Organized into 3 series: 1. Postcards and similar items; 2. Photographs; 3. Letters. Postcards and letters arranged by correspondent.
Provenance: All materials saved by Irene Pierce who later married AEF soldier and her correspondent J. R. Godwin. Passed to her grandson, Danny Phillips of Tallassee, who made them available for scanning after seeing a Montgomery Advertiser article about the Symposium on World War I in Alabama (July 25-26, 2008)
Processing: Olliff at AWHC processed collection which was unorganized though preserved in plastic bags. Olliff scanned all images except one (unimportant YMCA note paper containing scrawled addresses) into TIFs, PDF, and/or JPGs, burned them to CD rom, foldered and boxed originals, and returned originals and one CD copy to Mr. Phillips.
