Biographical Sketch:

Larry Register is a former mayor of Dothan (1987-1989) and former state senator (1970-1974), whose interests extend well beyond politics into local history and genealogy.  In 2002-2003, Mr. Register was appointed by the Dothan City Council to a Blue Ribbon Panel to explore site options for an Interstate 10 extension into the Dothan area.  This follows on Mr. Register’s early interest in a Memphis-to-Jacksonville turnpike.

Helen Cook Lamb (whose papers make up sub-group 1 of this collection) is Mr. Larry Register’s aunt.  Born in Chipley, FL, Sept. 27, 1899, she worked as a secretary to Judge Warren Jones of the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in Jacksonville, FL.  She and husband George Dewey Lamb retired to Indatlantic, FL, in 1965.  After George’s death on March 3, 1968, Mrs. Lamb moved to Marianna, FL, then to a retirement home in Dothan, AL, until her death on October 27, 1991.  She authored numerous short stories and worked on an unpublished manuscript for a novel.

A. J. (Alley J.) Register (whose papers comprise sub-group 3 of this collection) is Mr. Larry Register's father.  A railroad worker and union member, Mr. A. J. Register enjoyed a close friendship with Dothan magnate Wallace Malone, with whom he traveled to Canada and South America.
