How to Qualify

There are 2 Steps to qualifying for Free Student Support Services Services.

Step 1: (U.S. Dept. Of Education Guidelines)

A. Do you, or either or your parents already have a bachelor’s degree?

If NO = Skip B and C and go directly to Step 2. You qualify as a First Generation College Student

If YES = If you already have a Bachelor's degree, you do not qualify. If one of your parents has a degree, you are not a first generation college student, but you may still qualify by income or disability. You only have to meet one of the three qualifications, so please continue.

Please check out TROY-Dothan Campus Counseling Services (M116B) for assistance

B. Do you have a disability? (May include Learning Disability, Depression, Anxiety Disorders, etc.)

If YES = Skip C, go directly to Step 2. (You qualify if you can verify the disability)

If NO = Go to C. (You’re still in the running!)

C. Does your Taxable* Income qualify you financially? Check out this chart:

If your family size is 1 and your Taxable Income is below $ 15,315 = YES
If your family size is 2 and your Taxable Income is below $ 20,535 = YES
If
your family size is 3 and your Taxable Income is below $ 25,755 = YES
If
your family size is 4 and your Taxable Income is below $ 30,975 = YES
If
your family size is 5 and your Taxable Income is below $ 36,195 = YES
If
your family size is 6 and your Taxable Income is below $ 41,415 = YES
If
your family size is 7 and your Taxable Income is below $ 46,635 = YES
If
your family size is 8 and your Taxable Income is below $ 51,855 = YES
If
your family size is >8 add $4,770 for each additional member

* Taxable income is on Line 39 of IRS Form 1040, line 24 of 1040A or line 6 of 1040EZ

If YES = Go to Step 2 (Your taxable income qualifies you no matter your gross income)

If NO = Sorry, you did not qualify for SSS under any of the three D.O.E. guidelines, but other services are available. Please check out TROY-Dothan Campus Career and Counseling Services (M116B) for assistance.

Step 2: (Academic Support)

Having a need for academic support. Examples include:

  • Cumulative or Term GPA below 2.5
  • Previous failure of a subject still needed for graduation.
  • Poor study or test taking skills.
  • English or Math placement tests indicating need for academic support.
  • Other academic needs that can be verified.

Academic need is best determined during the assessment process. Print the SSS Application and bring it to Malone Hall 116 (or stop by and pick one up) to start the process. You must complete the assessment and be admitted into SSS by the director before you receive any SSS Services.  Click here for On-line SSS Application.
