DOTHAN – An astronaut and a well-known science educator will be among the
featured speakers at Aerospace Day 2007 at Troy University. Former NASA
Mission Specialist
Winston Scott will share tales about his twenty-four days in space, while Dr.
Zoon (Scientist Bill Holden) will demonstrate hands-on science projects teachers
can take back to their classrooms.
Sponsored by
TROY’s Wiregrass Math & Science Consortium, Aerospace Day is designed to inspire
teachers to ignite the imaginations of their students. The free event is
scheduled for November 9 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Sony Hall on the Dothan
Campus. Educators, space enthusiasts and members of the public are invited to
attend.
Scott traveled to space in 1996 aboard
Endeavour, and again the following year on Columbia. The retired Navy
captain completed three spacewalks totaling more than
nineteen hours, and
recorded his experiences in the book,
Reflections from Earth Orbit.
After retiring from NASA, Scott served as
executive director of the Florida Space Authority at Cape Canaveral and
was involved with the development of space-related initiatives in
Florida pertaining to industry, economics and education. He is currently
vice president and deputy general manager of Jacobs Engineering, a world
leader in engineering contracting.
Dr. Zoon is well-known for his line of
educational DVDs and project kits produced by the Pitsco Corporation. He
has developed products ranging from the SunEzoon Car to the KaZoon Kite
Kit.
The Wiregrass Math & Science Consortium
is funded by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education through Troy
University. For more information about Aerospace Day, contact Sandy
