COLUMBUS – College and university representatives from throughout the
region will gather at Troy University to discuss the educational needs
of soldiers serving in the Army during two upcoming Servicemembers
Opportunity Colleges (SOC) workshops. TROY welcomes SOC members
September 18 at its Columbus Location
in Georgia
and September 20 at the Dothan Campus.
The workshop on the Dothan Campus will be
held in Sony Hall, while the event in Columbus meets at the Columbus
Ironworks Trade and Convention Center. Both seminars run from 8 a.m. to
2:30 p.m.
Made up of higher education associations
and more than 1,700 colleges and universities, SOC works to ensure that
quality educational opportunities are available for members of the
military and their families, veterans, Coast Guard and civilian
Department of Defense employees. Recent changes to the Degree Network
System and Army Continuing Education System will be covered during the
workshops, which will be lead by Dr. Judith Loomer, Servicemembers
Opportunity Colleges Army Degrees project director.
“Troy University plays an important role
in helping SOC and the Army ensure that soldiers have a wide range of
degree options in both traditional and distance-learning delivery
modes,” Dr. Loomer said. “I am delighted to be able to celebrate that
collaboration by revisiting the commitments Troy University has made as
part of Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges.”
Troy University is a member of both the
SOC Consortium and the SOC Degree Network System, participating in
programs for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Hosting the
workshops is one more way Troy University can extend its commitment to
the men and women who serve our nation, according to Vickie Miles, TROY
registrar and assistant to the provost
“It is a privilege for Troy University to
be hosting this conference for an organization that does such important
work for the military,” Miles said. “Troy University is greatly honored
to partner with Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges to serve our
military and their families.”
In addition to its affiliation with SOC,
TROY is the second-largest provider of courses for the eArmyU distance
learning program. The University also maintains teaching sites at Fort
Benning, Fort Rucker and approximately 25 other military institutions
around the world.
