DOTHAN – The Troy University College of Education is now registering children
for Summer Spectacular 2007. During the four-week program, youngsters ages 4 to
11 will become “Super Scientists,” as they study astronomy, biology, physics,
chemistry, zoology and geology.Summer
Spectacular will take place Tuesday through Thursday mornings from June
5-28 at Kelly Springs Elementary in Dothan. Classes meet from 9 a.m. to
noon. Participants ages 6 through 12 will also be able to sign up for
an early morning reading tutorial from 8 to 9 a.m. The reading tutorial
will take place Monday through Thursday from June 4-28.
During the summer program, children will
take a hands-on, project-oriented approach to learning, according to
Troy University Early Childhood Education Instructor Rita Farver. The
project approach involves an in-depth investigation of a particular
topic, integrating language arts, mathematics, social studies, science
and fine arts.
“The children will work together on
projects,” Farver said. “This allows them to gain positive dispositions
toward learning, feelings of social competence and enhanced cognitive
and social development.”
The cost to participate in Summer
Spectacular is $18 per week. Snacks and materials are included. Space is
limited. The cost to participate in the Reading Tutorial is a one-time
fee of $20.
