Professor of Chemistry

Hello, I am Rodney Beaver, professor of chemistry at Troy University.  I am an organic chemist with a particular interest in analytical chromatography and spectroscopy.

After earning a PhD in organic chemistry from North Carolina State University and spending a year at Duke University as a postdoctoral research associate, I spent time in industry and ten years doing research at the University of Georgia. I have taught chemistry at the Dothan Campus for over a tenth of a century.  I, along with our other chemistry faculty, strive to incorporate aspects of our industrial and academic research into our course work and laboratory experiences.

The primary mission of the Dothan Campus chemistry faculty is to teach.  We are just completing an extensive remodeling and expansion of the teaching laboratories. These newly constructed chemistry laboratories are equipped with a variety of state-of-the art instrumentation including a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer with proton and C-13 capabilities, an FT-infrared spectrophotometer, a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, scanning and fixed wavelength UV/vis spectrophotometers, a high-pressure liquid chromatograph, an atomic absorption spectrometer, and numerous other instruments and specialized glassware. Students in all of our chemistry courses, beginning with the first semester of general chemistry, make extensive use of these facilities and instrumentation. Please visit http://spectrum.troy.edu/~rbeaver for more information about our facilities and courses.

If you have an inquisitive mind and an interest in science, the paths that can open with a degree in chemistry are many and varied. The degree may be a springboard to graduate study and research, medical, dental, or veterinary careers, law school, teaching, or industrial and managerial positions. No matter what field of study interests you, the strong educational foundation that you will acquire at Troy University will serve you well.
